The measurement “knot” originates from a method sailors used to measure ship speed in the 17th century. They used a rope with knots tied at regular intervals, called a “chip log,” which was thrown overboard and the number of knots that passed by in a set time period indicated the ship’s speed. One knot is now defined as one nautical mile per hour
